Embracing the outdoors is one of life great joys and part of our culture here at The Bushcraft Company. Embracing nature and taking in the fresh air not only has a great benefit on our mental health but also can impact our learning.

What is Outdoor Learning?

In a nutshell, it is what it sounds like, taking learning outdoors. Now, this can be done in a number of ways. Here at The Bushcraft Company we focus on residential school trips and focus on the educational aspects, environmental well-being and social skills.

What are the benefits of Outdoor Learning?

Problem-Solving

One key part of our outdoor learning program is problem-solving. Over the course of your stay, a number of activities highlighting skills for the class to work on will have them not only thinking creatively in their new environment but also solving problems they potentially haven’t faced. This not only helps with encouraging them to think on their feet, and work in new social groups but also improves their confidence.

Mental Health

We focus on embracing the outdoors and reconnecting with nature. Our whole experience from start to finish is based outdoors allowing children to breathe in the fresh air, disconnect from technology and try something new during their stay. By embracing the outdoors we hope to eliminate the state of stress that can be found in our everyday environments and focus on the fun elements while teaching new practical skills that will also create memories that last.

Physical Health

Another main benefit of outdoor learning is the impact on our physical health. By being outdoors we will be using our bodies a lot more than when we are regularly in a classroom, we host various practical activities to put knowledge into action allowing the information to then show its real-world impact. From team building exercises to English and Maths, there are so many different ways we can get the body moving whether through a drama class a shelter building session to also camouflaging in with our environment.

These are just a few of the many, many benefits outdoor learning can provide us. By changing the environment lessons take place to embracing the fresh air and what nature has to offer. We hope that not only will the children thoroughly enjoy their stay but also the teachers. With new techniques from our onsite staff who host outdoor education sessions regularly we hope these techniques will also come back to your school with you for how to incorporate new ideas into your lessons to break up the regular day to day.
