Going out into the wilderness is the perfect way to explore nature and the beautiful English countryside has a lot to offer!

With an abundance of lovely flora and fauna, there is always something to find out in the woodlands and below we’ve listed some of our favourites.

During your time on camp with Bushcraft what did you manage to spot?

Deer

The UK has six different types of deer, including roe, fallow and the larger red deer. Camping in the woodlands offers a perfect opportunity to see these majestic animals as they make their way through the forest.

Badger

These iconic black and white animals are a classic of English countryside. While mainly nocturnal, badgers sometimes make an appearance in the day time to search for food. Living in underground dens and tunnels called setts, they can be a more difficult animal to spot so keep your eyes peeled.

Fungi

As well as animals and plants, you can often spot fungi in the forest from their fruiting bodies known as mushrooms. Easily identifiable types include the oyster mushrooms which fan out from a central stalk and the fly agaric which has a red ‘cap’ and white spots – make sure not to touch this one as it is toxic!

Foxgloves

These spectacular flowers standout in woodland clearings with purple and pink flowers shaped like bells protruding from a stem that can reach up to 2 metres tall. Blooming in summer, these plants bring striking colour to woodlands. Be careful though as the plant is poisonous.

Wild Clematis

If you visited us during the autumn time there will have been a different range of plants growing in the forest. In autumn the seeds from wild clematis cluster to form an impressive white-grey feathery appearance, sometimes called old man’s beard!

Hopefully you got to see a good range of natural wonders while you were at camp. For those looking forward to a visit later this year, look out for all the above and more!
