It can be incredibly exciting knowing that you will be coming to Bushcraft this Summer for your Year 6 Residential, as well as any other school trip you might have planned with us. After its all booked and you have let the kids know, you might then start to get questions from parents about what are the best pieces of equipment they should pack for their kids to get the best out of their trip. Here we are going to let you know our top 5 picks and why. Of course there are many more items they can bring and you will receive a parent guide pack with the full list to help answer any parent questions you might receive.

  1. Water Bottle

Staying hydrated is incredibly important and when you add the fact we will be outdoors during summer for your trip, it’s essential we keep hydrated. By taking  a decent size bottle you will be able to ensure that you can have access to a drink at any point during your stay.

We recommend one with a sport spout and hand strap for carrying ease. But any bottle will most likely be suitable. There is no need to purchase a new one as you likely have one already at home but if you do wish to purchase a new one here is one we recommend.

Amazon sport Bottle – It even has a handy time card down the side to ensure you are drinking consistently throughout the day.

2. Waterproofs

Yes! We know you are booked with us in Summer but we all know the British weather can be unpredictable. We always recommend making sure you have a waterproof jacket minimum just in case the worst happens and we get some rain during your trip.

Any waterproof jacket will do but one we recommend which is lightweight and easy to pack is this one. Waterproof jacket.

3. Sleeping bag

It goes without saying we will be sleeping outside so it’s important to bring a good sleeping bag to keep cozy in the night so you can wake up feeling refreshed. It doesn’t need to be anything fancy just enough to keep your warm and light enough to pack.

Here’s two options for you to consider:

4. Torch

While at camp with us at Bushcraft we are away from the usual hustle and bustle and this includes light pollution. Be prepared for it to be very dark in the evenings, so a torch will come in handy as you walk from communal areas to tents and toilets etc. But one of the perks of it being so dark is that you will be able to see the moon and stars surrounding you.

We recommend a headtorch so that you can have your hands free to make it easier during activities and if you need to use the toilet.

5. Small backpack

Most of your equipment will remain in your tent or in the communal areas but as we are travelling from activity to activity its handy to have a small rucksack on hand where you can store your waterproof and water bottle in case you need them while out and about.

You don’t need to purchase a brand new backpack. The bags they use for school or PE should do just fine.

A surprise sixth recommendation!

6. We also recommend asking around friends and family members if your children can borrow any existing items. Part of our Leave No Trace philosophy extends to sustainable practices outside of our treatment of the woodlands. This includes encouraging people to use what they already have available to them.

And there you have it! These are our top equipment recommendations and we hope it helped prepare you for your trip us this summer 2023 at Bushcraft.
